The photo below was found on Tumblr and also on Facebook.  It is a picture of a veteran dog who is at the grave of his owner who was killed in combat.

The love and loyalty that dogs feel towards their owners is something truly incredible, and while some may acknowledge its presence, this connection and bond is arguably best understood by anyone who has ever owned any kind of pet.  Just as dogs are lucky to have owners who love and care for them, owners are very lucky to have a best friend who will remain loyal and loving through anything.

For more information, click on the photo, or go to the Facebook page for the memory of Sgt. Adam Cann.

And thank you to all of our soldiers (both human and canine) for the sacrifices you have made and all that you continue to do for us.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about an adoption event that Adopt NY had planned for Sunday, July 1 in Tompkins Square Park in East Village.

It was a hot and sunny day, but a very successful one!  Many of the wonderful dogs and cats that were there were adopted, or got enough publicity that they found their forever homes within days of the event!  Two of our USDW’s own volunteered with Zani’s Furry Friends, a wonderful nonprofit based out of New York City.

Below are some of the photos we captured on this fun and successful day:

We hope that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and maybe found a new friend.  We also hope that this event has inspired people to look into adopting a dog or cat from a New York animal shelter.  For more information about adoption events or about adopting a pet in general, check out the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals.

Another week has flown by (can you believe it?) and that means it’s time for another post about what’s going on in our wonderful city.  A few weeks ago, we featured Adopt NY‘s First Adoption Event, which took place in Tompkins Square Park.  This week, we are featuring another awesome adoption event that should be a lot of fun for everyone: Broadway Barks.

: Saturday, July 14
3:30–6:30 p.m.

Where:  Shubert Alley, West of Broadway, between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and 8th Avenue, Manhattan

This year’s Broadway Barks adoption event will be hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, both of whom will be joined by numerous Broadway stars to present animals that are available for adoption in NYC’s animal shelters.  The event will also include information on the importance of spaying and neutering your pet, as well as an auction for autographed memorabilia, the proceeds of which will benefit the attending shelters and adoption organizations.

For more information on this awesome star-studded event, check out the Broadway Barks website.

From all of us at Union Square Dog Walker, have a great weekend, and we hope to see you there!

Another week has gone by, and that means that another weekend has arrived!  While there is definitely going to be a lot going on in our incredible city this weekend, there is one particular event we would really like you and your dog to check out.  We also would love for you to spread the word on this event if you know of anyone who might be interested.

Adopt NY, a coalition of New York-based rescue groups working together to raise awareness about the unfortunate reality of kill shelters in the area, as well as the benefits of adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue, is holding its first adoption event.

What: Adopt NY First Adoption Event

More than a dozen cat and dog rescues from all over New York will be there, with many incredible and beautiful animals that are available for adoption.

When: Sunday, July 1, 2012 – 12-4 p.m.

Where: Tompkins Square Park, East Village, NYC

If there is only one thing you do this weekend, we hope that you will at the very least check out this awesome event.

For more information, check out the Adopt NY website, the Adopt NY Facebook page, or the event page.

From all of us at Union Square Dog Walker, have a great weekend.  And we hope to see you there!

Sidney’s glare says it all.  She is not impressed, and might even be a bit suspicious of something you’re doing.

Taken in the garden patio behind Sidney’s owner’s apartment, by the talented Laura, we knew this had to be our photo of the week.

And from Amanda, our manager: “Sidney is a rescue from the Bronx and she’s a Union Square Dog Walker favorite!”

So, if you needed another reason to adopt a dog from a shelter/rescue, just look at the picture above.
